CULTURE HUB

The Lancaster Museum of Art and History is dedicated to strengthening awareness, enhancing accessibility, and igniting the appreciation of art, history, and culture in the Antelope Valley through dynamic exhibitions, innovative educational programs, creative community engagement, and a vibrant collection that celebrates the richness of the region.

ARTIST

Vojislav Radovanović (1982. Valjevo, RS, former Yugoslavia) is a Serbian visual artist, art director, and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, CA. Witness in his youth turbulent political unrest and war in the Balkan region, his work advocates for beauty, environmentalism, mental health, and societal transmutation. His work often utilizes a conceptual concentration on wild plants, specifically weeds. The resilient, boundary-defying plants become a metaphor for nature’s powerful ingenuity. Weeds' conceptualization also applies to humanity's multiple aspects: its endurance, queer identity, the immigrant experience, and colonization. Since his first solo exhibition in the National Museum of Valjevo at age fifteen, he has participated in over 200 group exhibitions. Important cultural institutions where he presented his works are Museum of Art and History in Lancaster and Brea Art Gallery (California, USA); Mall Galleries in London (Great Britain); UNESCO Headquarters and The Institut Suédois in Paris (France); Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun, (Poland); The Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (CBA), Madrid, (Spain); Belgrade City Museum, Museum of Yugoslavia, Art Pavilion Cvijeta Zuzorić and The White Palace in Belgrade, (Serbia).

SOCIAL IMPACT INITIATIVE

Art In Residence’s mission is to explore and realize the potential of public art in the Antelope Valley through active practice, outreach, and education. Supporting and bringing opportunities for artists in Antelope Valley, CA is at the heart of AIR’s mission. AIR’s aim is to develop an open-air exhibition space for rotating exhibitions, an Artist In Residence program, public workshops, and portfolio development opportunities for local and international artists. AIR’s open-air alternative exhibition space is a gallery with no walls. The exhibition space, bordering the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, is a space to discover and express what it means to be “in residence,” using the high desert as a backdrop to consider the social, political, historical and phenomenological aspects of the surroundings. In addition to exhibition space, AIR seeks to add value to the Antelope Valley community by partnering with local organizations in creative placemaking opportunities, engaging with the community in both civic and creative endeavors. Supplementing outreach and exhibitions, AIR offers public workshops and portfolio development opportunities to help artists sustain their creative work over time as well as prepare aspiring artists for further formal arts education. Finally, Art In Residence seeks to expand upon and support the local high school arts-based curriculum by providing opportunities outside the classroom for students to develop creative work.

As part of the renovation of the Skytower Park in Lancaster, Vojislav Radovanović designed two murals totaling 300’ inspired by the community and painted with their assistance. In the first public workshop on site, MOAH, AIR and Vojislav gathered people’s ideas, wishes, and themes. Several concepts stood out: Community, Family, Exploration, Joy and Nature. From that input, Vojislav Radovanović conceived two designs and sketched them out on the walls. During a second public workshop, more than 60 participants (mostly neighbors, parents with kids, teenagers, adults, and seniors) collectively painted within the outlines contributing to the project. Now in the final stage, Vojislav is completing the details for an unveiling at the end of the month.
