TAYLOR GRIFFITH

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, 2021 - 2022

Taylor Griffith is a multi-disciplinary artist from Oakland, California. Currently he is living and working in Los Angeles. He received his BA in photography with a minor in studio art from the university of La Verne. Taylor recently graduated from the Graduate Art MFA program at Art Center College of Design. His work calls into question the relationships between natural systems and changing human interactions with the landscape. Taylor takes a multi-medium approach to the interdisciplinary nexus of art and ecology. He works in photography, sculpture, time based media, and printmaking. He collaborates with scientists, artists, and organizations to get out in the field, collecting imagery, audio recordings, notes, and samples that then come into the studio to be distilled down into a body of work. His work aims to continue conversations about the challenges that face our planet and act as a place to start conversations about moving towards a more ecologically minded future.

Taylor is working with AltaSea to bring community engagement, focus and care to ecological health and more sustainable futures. Taylor leads a series of panels called Intertidal Encounters that bring together artists and scientists whose work focuses on the ocean, with an emphasis on southern California's coastline. He is also hosting a series of beach cleanups where participants can create artistic works from their findings and learn about the health of their natural surroundings.

CULTURE HUB

Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s within the WWII era barracks near the Port of Los Angeles. Today, AGCC hosts over 50 studio artists in addition to a variety of programs to engage the Los Angeles Harbor region, including arts education in local schools, community classes, cultural events, and exhibitions of contemporary art. We believe that when the Arts are truly accessible and culturally inclusive, they are a catalyst for community belonging and positive change.

SOCIAL IMPACT INITIATIVE

AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles is a nonprofit oceanographic research, education, and community engagement campus where innovators collaborate to develop solutions critical to climate, the environment, and energy, while also imparting that knowledge to the next generation of ocean explorers, innovators, and researchers. We are dedicated to building a campus to meet and rectify our planet’s challenges; and our established programs and partnerships place us on the cusp of being a world class institute.
