RENE FISHER-MIMS

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, 2021 - 2022

Rene Fisher-Mims established S.H.I.N.E. MUWASI (in the hands of God), with an intent & purpose to spread the knowledge of West African Drum culture to women in the community. With a vision of healing, empowering, caring, and inspiring women to play the instruments of their African descent, SHINE wishes to pass on the wisdom to those who desire to gain awareness of this culture through teaching, and performing in different areas. Performances for concerts, black history programs, churches, shows, and private parties are many tools used by SHINE in an effort to show the wonderful joy of women drummers and musicians.

Rene Fisher-Mims, in partnership with Wellnest and LA Commons, will host a series of music- and discussion-based workshops, centered around individual and community healing. Using her knowledge of West African drum playing, she will guide the workshops so the participants can fully engage and experience healing through music.

CULTURE HUB

LA Commons engages communities in artistic and cultural expression that tells their unique stories and serves as a basis for dialogue, interaction, and a shared understanding of Los Angeles. Through community-based arts programs centered on youth leadership development, the organization helps diverse, generally low-income neighborhoods create dynamic works of public art that build community connection and empowerment.
