LORNA FAULKNER

BORDERLANDS REGION, 2022 - 2023

Lorna Faulkner (she/her) is a digital artist who also works in watercolors and acrylics. Faulkner was born in Mexico and moved to Arizona when at 15. She draws inspiration from her surroundings, books, anime, and dreams. Faulkner has been drawing all her life and started making art seriously in 6th grade, copying screenshots from her favorite animated shows. She now has a Bachelor's in Media Arts and Animation.

In partnership with Amigos Sin Corona, Lorna connected with members of her community to tell their immigration stories in a children’s book format. Her goal is to address stigma and encourage empathy around the subject of migration, with a particular interest in supporting the wellbeing of children who have experienced displacement. She is donating copies of the book to libraries in the Borderlands and immigrant resource centers for local children.

CULTURE HUB

Border Arts Corridor (BAC) is a nonprofit organization, committed to serving both Douglas and its sister city across the border. BAC began as a series of small outdoor art experiences on G Avenue, the major street in downtown Douglas. This ultimately grew into a bi-national Artwalk, then an arts service organization, creating opportunities for artists on the border. BAC is proud to focus on creating art with and for the Douglas and Agua-Prieta communities, bringing together artists of national stature with the artists living and working on the border. As nationally recognized artists have begun to interface with the community through BAC, it has cultivated a sense of pride and community self-esteem. At the same time, investment in the artists already living and working on both sides of the border here has strengthened a sense of self and civic engagement for residents.

SOCIAL IMPACT INITIATIVE

Amigos Sin Corona is a non-profit organization in Agua Prieta, Sonora México founded in 2020 to help the community fight the Covid-19 pandemic. They started a funds raising event called Redeton in 2020 to support the health sector, donated in equal parts to Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social and Hospital General, both in Agua Prieta. This money was used to buy materials and equipment required during that time of pandemic. Collaborating with Raíces de Amor, business and community members, they donated trees, bushes, hoses and a Virgen de Guadalupe image to decorate Hospital General green areas.

In January 2021, again, funds were collected and donated to buy more oxygen tanks for the community. Amigos sin Corona has helped during hard times due to natural disasters, donating essential items and construction materials, small houses were built for people who were affected. At this moment, Amigos sin Corona's work is focused on raising funds to buy an ambulance to be used by the Agua Prieta people. Also, they are collaborating to help a little girl who needs a liver transplant as soon as possible
