JOHNSON SIMON
INDIANAPOLIS, 2024 - 2025
Johnson Simon’s paintings encompasses the beauty of movement and gives him an outlet to move as freely as he desires through his work. Born in Turks and Caicos, Johnson came to the United States as a child and grew up in Florida. Johnson was diagnosed at birth with Cerebral Palsy, a disorder that affects one’s ability to control the body’s movement. He was introduced to art in 1st grade through physical therapy, as a way for him to practice new movements and exercise his creativity. This birthed a love for art that spanned throughout his childhood. He graduated with honors from WMU and went on to receive his Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Indiana University. Since then, Johnson has been a teaching artist at a community organization for those with physical and developmental disabilities all while launching his own art career. He hopes his work will show others how they too can express their movement despite physical limitations. Johnson dreams of creating a successful career in art while advocating for others with disabilities.
“As someone with a physical limitation, I have always been interested in body movement, but it was a dance recital at undergrad that inspired me to create my first dance-focused expressionistic painting. When I paint, I can move freely.”
COMMUNITY PROJECT
Johnson Simon is partnering with ArtMix in Indianapolis to curate an exhibition titled “Step Into Our Shoes”. As an extension of his MFA thesis at Herron, the exhibition seeks to educate others on the reality of living with limitations. He hopes the exhibition cultivates empathy, builds connection and unity among all differently abled bodies, brings awareness to the limitations of those belonging to the disabled community, and inspires advocacy of all participants and attendees.
ORGANIZATIONAL PARTNER
ArtMix is an Indianapolis-based not-for-profit organization that works to transform the lives of people with and without disabilities through the creation of art. With six core programs and additional special projects, ArtMix serves more than 7,000 people annually. ArtMix provides adaptive equipment and trained Teaching Artists skilled in adapting arts lessons for people of all abilities. Our holistic approach to art focuses on participant abilities rather than their disabilities and inclusive arts programs that encourage people of all abilities to create together. While ArtMix programs provide access to the arts, our programs also utilize the arts as a means of learning and skill-building. In this way, ArtMix provides both access to and opportunities for achievement in and through the arts for people with and without disabilities.
